Artistic Director and Conductor  Gum Nanse

 

A forceful and dynamic conductor whose love and understanding for music has made GUM NANSE one of the most respected in his field.

In 1977, GUM was one of the prize winners at the prestigious ‘Herbert von Karajan Conductor's Competition and was the first Korean to be given an opportunity to conduct Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Since returning home in 1980, he was appointed as the conductor of KBS Symphony Orchestra for 12 years.

During the past few years, GUM has been active as a festival director. The 'Music Isle Festival in Jeju’ (since 2005) and the 'Manhattan Chamber Music Festival’ (since 2012) have successfully testified how he could inspire people with the magic of chamber music. In addition, the 'Music Isle Festival in Jeju’ joined the European Festivals Association(EFA) in 2010.

For years, GUM has been devoting himself to discover many gifted young musicians and he considers this as one of his most important roles. For example, Sarah Chang and Hanna Chang are some of the famous musicians that GUM recognized from very early on. GUM regularly conducts Korea United College Orchestra(KUCO) which consists of non-music major students from 25 universities nationwide.

He also conducts Korean Youth Dream Orchestra(KYDO) which consists of young, music-loving adolescents from 25 small provincial towns once a year.

Currently, GUM is Principal at the prestigious Seoul Yego Arts High School and he is the Artistic Director of Seongnam Philharmonic Orchestra since 2015. He was also appointed as the Principal Guest Conductor of Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in September 2015.


Cellist Joo Yeon CHOI


Cellist Joo Yeon CHOI gave her debut recital when she was 13 years olds in Kumho Art Hall, following a successful prodigy Kumho audition. She performed as solist with numerous orchestras, including the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Royal Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg Festival Orchestra.

She appeared many times with Radio Philharmonique de France and L'Ensemble Intercontemporain, and was frequently invited to give recitals and concerts by UNESCO in Paris, Rutesheim cello Festival, M. Haydn Festival, Laeistzhalle in Hamburg, IRCAM in France, Seoul Arts Center, Hoam Art Hall, korean Culture Center in Paris, Notre Dame de Paris, Salle Pleyel, Cité de la Musique, Tonyeong international Music Festival, Jinju international Music Festival.

She attracted the attention of audiences by playing with Ivan Monighetti, Frans Helmerson, Philippe Muller, Arto Noras in Pablo Casals Festival in Prades and giving concert tours in France with François Salque, Frédéric Lodéon for the Cello Ensemble.

She played also with excellent musicians, Olivier Gardon, Olivier Charlier, Laurent Korcia, Itamat Golan, Roland Pidoux, Simone Young, Susanna Malkki. She has won many prizes and awards, including First Prize and Grand-Prix in Seoul Symphony Orchestra Competition, Elise Meyer Competition, Korean Youth Music Competition, Seoul Chamber Music Competition, Strad Competition, Haydn Concerto Performer Competition.

The Maurice Ravel Music Academy awarded her 'Mélomanes Côte Sud' Special Prize for her excellent Beethoven Cello Sonata performance.

She studied with Jin-Kyunk Chee, Sung-Won Yang in Korea, obtaining a Licence and Master Diploma in the class of Philippe Muller at the National Conservatory of Paris(Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris/CNSMDP), also she studied string quartet in the class of Jean Sulem at the CNSMDP. 

She was the youngest admitted to the Professional Performer Diploma(Konzertexam) in Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in the class of Arto Noras. She was selected as scholarship recipient by Tarazzi Foundation(France) and DAAD(Germany) and received an instrumental sponsorship from Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.

Her first recording was released by DUX in 2017 with Korea Mecenat Foundation‘s sponsorship. She was assistant principal solo cellist in Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra until 2017 and teaching in Hanse University.


 

New World Chamber Orchestra


After having its inaugural concert at the '97 Seoul International Music Festival, New World Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly known as Euro-Asian Philharmonic) was established in an effort to reach for a new horizon between Europe and Asia’s musical exchange. New World Philharmonic Orchestra has started its official performances since 2000 and has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in Korea.

Under the dynamic and insightful leadership of its artistic director Gum Nanse, New World Philharmonic Orchestra holds concerts more than 100 times a year on a variety of stages both in Korea and abroad with their expansive repertoires.

Over the years, some of the most distinguished and world renowned soloists who have performed with New World Philharmonic include Boris Berezovsky (2009), Jesse Norman (2009) and most recently Jonas Kaufman (2015).

Residing at Chungmu Arts Center, New World Philharmonic has been developing unique projects and various concert series in collaboration with artists, companies and art centers.
